"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people because all sinned." Rom 5:12
The source of sin can be traced back to the very beginning of humanity's existence. In the book of Genesis, we read about the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. This initial transgression introduced sin into the world, forever altering the course of human history. This reveals that sin is a foundational problem that affects all of humanity. It's crucial to recognize that sin didn't originate from God but emerged as a consequence of human rebellion. Sin, in its essence, is a separation from God. It's the result of a choice to go our own way rather than following God's perfect plan.
When Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, they sought knowledge and self-determination apart from God's guidance. This act of defiance introduced sin into the human heart, and it has been a struggle ever since. Satan, often referred to as the tempter, capitalizes on our fallen nature and exploits our vulnerabilities. He is the master deceiver, constantly seeking to lead us away from God's presence and purpose. His ploys are cunning and well-crafted, appealing to our desires and weaknesses. He understands our inclinations and exploits them to draw us away from the Lord. The urge to sin, therefore, is a product of our fallen condition and the relentless efforts of the enemy. It arises from our innate human desires, which, when unchecked and unguided by God's truth, lead us astray.
As we draw near to God, He draws near to us, and His presence becomes a shield against the wiles of the enemy. So where does the urge to sin come from? The source is threefold: Temptation comes from our own lusts according to James 1:14, the devil according to Matt 4:1, and the world system organized under Satan’s authority according to 1 John 5:19. Until Christ returns, mankind will live in its current fallen condition, and we will be tempted by self-indulgent pursuits and Satan’s ploys to turn us from the Lord. Although God doesn’t promise to rescue us from all temptations, He limits them and provides a way of escape so we can endure without yielding to sin.Â
While we may live in a fallen world, we do not do so without hope. Christ's return is our ultimate assurance that one day sin will be vanquished, and we'll dwell in His perfect presence for eternity. Until then, let us remain vigilant, relying on God's grace and strength to navigate the challenges of this fallen condition, resisting the urge to sin, and striving to live in alignment with His will.
Whenever something is tempting us, draw near in submission to God and resist the devil. Then ask the Lord for the grace and strength to stand firm against sin. There'll always be a temptation to sin, but with the power of the Holy Spirit, we can resist it.
