"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then, you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing, and perfect will." Rom 12:2:
Transformation comes through aligning our minds with God's, leading to a clearer understanding of His perfect will and purpose for our lives. In a world filled with distractions and temptations, it's easy to fall into the trap of conforming to the patterns around us. Yet, Rom 12:2 urges us not to conform but to be transformed by renewing our minds. This transformation, rooted in aligning our thoughts with God's, unlocks a deeper understanding of His perfect will and purpose for our lives. To renew our minds is to intentionally shift our focus from the fleeting desires of the world to the eternal truths of God. It's a process of reprogramming our thoughts, attitudes, and perspectives to align with His Word. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, we begin to see the world through God's eyes.
Not conforming to this world is basically rejecting this world's philosophies and standards, and not willing to allow the world to dictate who we are, who we'll become, and how we'll act or think. It is a statement made by someone who yearns for freedom. Through this transformation, we gain clarity and discernment to recognize God's will in our lives. God's Will is not just good or pleasing but perfect, perfectly tailored to our unique gifts, talents, and calling. As our minds are renewed, we become more attuned to His voice, more sensitive to His leading, and more obedient to His commands. John 15:19 says, “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” Jesus tells us to stand apart from the world and be a light for him. Therefore, going against the grain is a way to share the love of Jesus Christ.
In this season, as we commit to aligning our minds with God, we open ourselves to deeper intimacy with Him. We invite His Spirit to work within us, molding us into vessels fit for His purpose. Phil 2:15 says; “So that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.” Ultimately, as Christians, we must learn to shine our light and do things the world is unwilling to do. We must take what we see the world doing and weigh it against the Bible. Phil 4:8 tells us to dwell on “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable,” and anything that is excellent or praiseworthy. After all, we're not of this world. As we walk in step with His will, we experience a sense of fulfillment and joy that surpasses anything the world has to offer.
As Christians, we must face the fact that the Devil has created an “atmosphere” in this world that's ungodly and which leads people away from God and into sin. Furthermore, the Devil’s intent in creating an ungodly atmosphere is to have people conform to it just as if they were conforming to a mold. That's why God warns us not to conform to the pattern, the mold, of the world. We must become sensitive to the spiritual atmosphere around us and be able to recognize how we're being influenced and whether that influence is godly or ungodly. The Message version translates Rom 12:2a as: “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.” Let us, therefore, embrace the transformative power of renewing our minds. Let's allow God to reshape our thoughts and perspectives, guiding us into His perfect will for our lives. And as we do, may we find ourselves walking in alignment with His purpose, bringing glory to His name in all we do.
